Free biology class discussion CPD for KS3 and KS4 science teachers
25th and 26th August
Institute of Education
London
This course focused on stem cell research as an example of a socio-scientific issue and drew upon materials created as part of the SciberBrain project to explore a variety of view points to give teachers a sense of the complexities that can arise when attempting to discuss controversial issues in science.
Our facilitators got participants to use critical and creative thinking combined with communication skills to engage their students in conversations. Our course combined a variety of methods for philosophical enquiry to create and sustain a dialogue with discussions of a scientific nature.
Participants were also given the optional opportunity to gain practical experience of running a discussion on stem cells along side a facilitator at the British Science Festival in September . The 2 day workshop event was held at the Institute of Education in London. The practical experience sessions were at the University of Surrey in Guildford.
